HOW IT WORKS
1

Drop the m4a file

Drag your M4A onto the page or click to browse. It is read locally, never sent anywhere.

2

Choose WAV

WAV output is 16-bit PCM, so there is no quality or bitrate menu. Click Convert to WAV to start.

3

Save the wav

The finished WAV downloads straight back to your device. Nothing touched a server on the way.

Why convert here, not there

No upload, ever

Server converters receive your m4a on their disk. This one reads it in your browser and nowhere else.

Local conversion

Choose your file, then click Convert to WAV. The browser may need to download the converter engine first; conversion time depends on your device and file.

No account, no daily cap

Convert every m4a you own, free. Nobody meters you, nobody asks for an account.

The two formats, briefly

M4AM4A is an audio container. This converter writes AAC audio inside M4A, not Apple Lossless.
WAVWAV is a container commonly used for PCM audio. This converter writes 16-bit PCM; the source sample rate and channels are not deliberately changed.

When you need this

  • Decode M4A for an editor or workflow that asks for WAV PCM audio. This output is 16-bit, not an enhancement of the original recording, and can be much larger than compressed audio.

Tested on this tool

On 3 November 2026 we ran a synthetic test file through this converter: a 10-second, 44.1 kHz mono M4A (AAC) holding a 260 Hz tone, 102,237 bytes. The output was an 882,766-byte WAV - uncompressed 16-bit PCM at 44.1 kHz mono, 10.0 seconds - that decoded cleanly, with the 260 Hz tone still present when we measured it.

  • The output was about 8.6 times larger than the source. That is expected: WAV stores raw samples, roughly 88,200 bytes per second at 44.1 kHz 16-bit mono, with no compression.
  • Decoding AAC to PCM does not add quality back; it gives you an uncompressed copy of what the AAC held.

One synthetic tone is not every M4A. Real music and stereo or higher-sample-rate sources were not part of this test, and a phone browser can hit memory limits before a desktop does.

Good to know

  • WAV output here is 16-bit PCM. There is no bitrate choice; converting a higher-bit-depth source can reduce precision.
  • First use downloads the audio/video engine (about 30 MB). The input cap is 2 GB, but available browser memory can run out below that.

M4A to WAV, answered

Why convert M4A to WAV?+
Decode M4A for an editor or workflow that asks for WAV PCM audio. This output is 16-bit, not an enhancement of the original recording, and can be much larger than compressed audio.
Which quality should I pick?+
WAV output here is 16-bit PCM. There is no bitrate choice; converting a higher-bit-depth source can reduce precision.
Does converting M4A to WAV lose quality?+
The export uses 16-bit PCM. It cannot recover detail already lost in a compressed source, and a higher-bit-depth source is reduced to 16-bit. Keep the original if precision matters.
Is there a file size limit?+
The hard cap is 2 GB per file. The practical limit is your device: conversion runs in its memory, so very large files can fail on phones with little free RAM. There is no server-side cap because nothing is uploaded.
Does my file get uploaded anywhere?+
No. The file is read and converted by code running in this browser tab. Your file is never sent to a server - its contents stay in this tab.
