Convert M4A to MP3 on your device. Choose your file, convert, and check the result before sharing.
Drop the m4a file
Drag your M4A onto the page or click to browse. It is read locally, never sent anywhere.
Choose MP3 and bitrate
Pick 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps. 192 kbps is the default. Then click Convert to MP3.
Save the mp3
The finished MP3 downloads straight back to your device. Nothing touched a server on the way.
Why convert here, not there
No upload, ever
Server converters receive your m4a on their disk. This one reads it in your browser and nowhere else.
Local conversion
Choose your file, then click Convert to MP3. The browser may need to download the converter engine first; conversion time depends on your device and file.
No account, no daily cap
Convert every m4a you own, free. Nobody meters you, nobody asks for an account.
The two formats, briefly
| M4A | M4A is an audio container. This converter writes AAC audio inside M4A, not Apple Lossless. | |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | MP3 is a lossy audio format. This converter encodes it at the selected bitrate rather than copying the original audio stream. | |
When you need this
- Use MP3 when your receiving app or player does not accept M4A. This page re-encodes the audio, so keep the original and check the download in that app before replacing it.
Tested on a sample file
On 26 October 2026 we converted a synthetic 90-second stereo M4A (AAC at 192 kbps) file (2.1 MB, 44.1 kHz; tones and noise, not music) to MP3 at the default 192 kbps in Chrome on a Linux server, not a laptop or phone. The result was a 2.1 MB MP3 of the same length, about the same size as the M4A. It took about 2 seconds once the converter had loaded.
The AAC source and MP3 output in this test are both lossy; the output was about the same size at the same bitrate. It is for compatibility. The 128 kbps option gave a 1.4 MB MP3 for this file.
We decoded each MP3 from start to end with no errors. We did not listen to them. Not tested: phones, Safari, real music recordings, long files, Apple Lossless (ALAC) M4A files.
M4A vs MP3: what changes
| M4A | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Kind | Audio | Audio |
| Compression | AAC audio output here | Lossy audio |
| Typical size | Depends on the file and encoding settings. | Measure the exported file; it may be larger. |
| Opens on | Check the source in your app and browser. | Check the downloaded file in the receiving app. |
| Best for | Keep the original as your source. | MP3 workflows, subject to the limits below. |
Keep the original. Compare the exported file before sharing or replacing it.
Good to know
- The audio bitrate choices are 128, 192, 256 and 320 kbps, with 192 kbps as the default. Lower bitrates usually reduce size but can make loss more audible.
- First use downloads the audio/video engine (about 30 MB). The input cap is 2 GB, but available browser memory can run out below that.
