Why convert here, not there
No upload, ever
Audio files are personal. M4A to FLAC here happens inside one browser tab, end to end.
Local conversion
Conversion runs locally after you click Convert. The first audio or video conversion may need to download the converter engine.
No account, no daily cap
No account or daily conversion quota. The per-file cap is 2 GB, and available device memory can impose a lower practical limit.
The two formats, briefly
| M4A | M4A is an audio container. This converter writes AAC audio inside M4A, not Apple Lossless. | |
|---|---|---|
| FLAC | FLAC uses lossless audio compression. Encoding decoded audio as FLAC does not restore detail already lost in a source recording. | |
When you need this
- Use FLAC when your player or archive needs losslessly compressed audio. Converting M4A to FLAC cannot recover detail missing from the source; compare output size rather than assuming it shrinks.
M4A vs FLAC: what changes
| M4A | FLAC | |

| Kind | Audio | Audio |
| Compression | AAC audio output here | Lossless audio compression |
| Typical size | Depends on the file and encoding settings. | Measure the exported file; it may be larger. |

| Best for | Keep the original as your source. | FLAC workflows, subject to the limits below. |
Keep the original. Compare the exported file before sharing or replacing it.
Good to know
- FLAC uses lossless compression of decoded audio. There is no bitrate choice, and lossy source detail cannot be recovered.
- First use downloads the audio/video engine (about 30 MB). The input cap is 2 GB, but available browser memory can run out below that.
