WAV vs MP3: what you are really choosing

A three-minute stereo 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM recording is about 32 MB before container overhead. At 192 kbps, MP3 audio is about 4.3 MB. These are examples calculated from those settings, not fixed sizes or a guarantee of identical sound. Here is what is actually going on.

WAV: the exact copy

WAV is a container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. PCM sample rate, bit depth and channels determine what it stores; WAV can also contain other encodings. The .wav extension alone does not prove CD settings or a lossless recording. That is why studios record and edit in WAV: every edit starts from the full original.

MP3: the clever approximation

MP3, standardized in 1993 from Fraunhofer IIS research, uses a psychoacoustic model - a map of what human hearing misses. Quiet sounds hidden behind loud ones, frequencies most adults cannot hear: out they go. Audible differences depend on the recording, encoder, bitrate and listener. Higher bitrates usually retain more detail, but do not make MP3 lossless.

The WAV to MP3 converter on this site defaults to 192 kbps, with 128, 256, and 320 kbps options when you want a smaller file or one closer to the original.

The catch with lossy

MP3 quality loss is permanent and it stacks. Convert an MP3 to MP3 again and more detail disappears. That is why the rule is: keep a lossless master, make lossy copies from it.

Tested on this site

On 3 November 2026 we converted a synthetic 30-second stereo WAV (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, 5,292,078 bytes) with this site's WAV to MP3 converter at the default 192 kbps. The MP3 came out at 721,650 bytes, still 30 seconds, and the downloaded file decoded cleanly when we checked it - about 7 times smaller. Scaled to three minutes, the same settings give about 31.8 million bytes of WAV and 4.3 million bytes of MP3, matching the calculated examples above.

At a fixed bitrate like 192 kbps, the MP3's size follows the recording's length, not its content - what changes with denser music is how the MP3 sounds, not how big it is. One synthetic clip is not every recording, and because the converter runs on your device, very long recordings depend on your phone or computer's memory.

Which one when

Recording, editing, archiving: WAV. Sharing, phones, cars, group chats: MP3, after checking that the receiving app accepts it. Need to move between them? WAV to MP3 and MP3 to WAV both run on your device here.
