MP4 vs MOV: same family, different worlds
Short answer: MP4 and MOV are containers built on the same structure, and the codec inside - not the file extension - decides whether a player can open the file. This site's MOV to MP4 converter re-encodes the video as H.264 with AAC audio inside an MP4 container (measured example below). Re-encoding is not the only way MOV becomes MP4 elsewhere: some tools can remux, copying the streams unchanged when the target container supports them.
MP4 and MOV are containers
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, built for professional video editing: multiple tracks, chapters, timecode, and support for many codecs, including the large, lightly-compressed ones cameras and editors use. MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a standardized format based on the same structure. An MP4 usually carries H.264 video with AAC audio in a package many current players support.
Playback still depends on codec profile, resolution and device limits. Renaming a file from .mov to .mp4 does not change its contents, and an MP4 extension alone does not guarantee playback.
When to convert
Convert when the target device, app or website cannot play your MOV because of the codec inside - an MP4 with a widely supported codec like H.264/AAC can play where the original does not. The MOV to MP4 converter does this on your device. If your MOV already plays where you need it, converting gains nothing. If you are editing in Final Cut or Premiere, keep the MOV master and export MP4 at the end.
Recording a lot of video to share? On the iPhone, Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible records H.264 instead of HEVC. The file is still a .mov, but its codec already plays nearly everywhere - so you may not need to convert at all.
What our converter actually produced
Tested 3 November 2026 on the live MOV to MP4 page with a generated clip. A synthetic fixture, not customer footage or a phone benchmark.
MPEG-4 video + AAC audio in MOV
- Input MOV
- 150,534 bytes; 2.00 seconds; 640 x 480; MPEG-4 Part 2 video + AAC audio
- Output MP4
- 44,265 bytes; 2.02 seconds; 640 x 480; H.264 video + AAC audio
- How it was run
- Real file dropped on the live page, Convert to MP4 clicked, downloaded output inspected box by box
The output was smaller and about 0.02 seconds longer in this run. These numbers are one tiny fixture; they do not predict your file's size, duration or quality.
What is not verified
- Physical iPhone/Safari or Android behavior, low-memory devices, large files and long recordings were not covered by this clip.
- ProRes, HEVC and every other codec an MOV can hold were not tested here. Some sources may convert slowly or fail. Compatibility of any specific MOV with a specific player depends on the codec and the device, not the file extension.
- Subtitles, multiple audio tracks, chapters and other metadata may not survive conversion. Check the full result before deleting any source.
- Output can be larger than input, and the tool re-encodes rather than making a lossless container copy. It cannot restore detail missing from the source.
