Convert AVI to GIF
Convert AVI to GIF on your device. Choose your file, convert, and check the result before sharing.
Drop the avi clip
Add your AVI video. Shorter clips make better GIFs - a few seconds is ideal.
Convert to GIF
Frames are rendered and packed into a GIF on your device.
Share it
The GIF downloads locally. Check that your receiving app supports animated GIFs.
Why convert here, not there
No upload, ever
Your clip is processed locally, without sending it to a conversion server.
Local conversion
A short avi becomes a GIF in seconds, all locally.
No account, no daily cap
Free with no daily cap - loop as many clips as you like.
The two formats, briefly
| AVI | AVI is a container that can hold different video and audio codecs. The extension alone does not tell you the quality, size or compatibility. | |
|---|---|---|
| GIF | GIF can hold looping animation, with up to 256 colors per frame and no audio. Converting to or from GIF can change colors, dimensions or animation. | |
When you need this
- Turn a short AVI clip into a silent looping image for an app that accepts GIF. The output is not a full-quality video archive and can be larger than the source.
AVI vs GIF: what changes
| AVI | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Kind | Video | Video |
| Compression | Depends on source encoding | Limited-palette image |
| Typical size | Depends on the file and encoding settings. | Measure the exported file; it may be larger. |
| Opens on | Check the source in your app and browser. | Check the downloaded file in the receiving app. |
| Best for | Keep the original as your source. | GIF workflows, subject to the limits below. |
Keep the original. Compare the exported file before sharing or replacing it.
Tested on this tool
On 3 November 2026 we ran a synthetic test file through this converter: an 8-second, 640x480 AVI (MPEG-4 video with MP3 audio), 2,472,282 bytes. The output was a 1,529,871-byte GIF - 480x360, 8.01 seconds - that decoded cleanly when we checked it.
- The GIF came out at 480x360, scaled down from the 640x480 source in this test.
- The sound did not carry over. GIF is a silent format, so audio is always dropped.
- GIF stores at most 256 colors per frame, so expect visible banding on gradients compared with the video.
One small synthetic clip is not every AVI. Longer or higher-resolution sources make much larger GIFs and were not part of this test, and a phone browser can hit memory limits before a desktop does.
Good to know
- This video becomes a silent looping GIF at 12 frames per second and 480 pixels wide. There is no quality or bitrate choice.
- First use downloads the audio/video engine (about 30 MB). The input cap is 2 GB, but available browser memory can run out below that.
